Lions Stay Ahead Of Wildcats
Daniel Rodgers, Sports
Lawrence County began a four game road trip Tuesday night in Columbia. The Lions were on a two game win streak after starting the season 2-12. Both teams desperately wanted a win to gain momentum.
Lawrence County started out in control, with a steady paced game plan. Columbia played frantic and missed a slew of open shots at the beginning.
Even with a 10-10 score at the end of the first quarter, it felt as though LCHS had the game in hand.
However, into the second period, Columbia settled down and managed to take a modest lead at the half, 31-26
As the second half opened, Columbia came out with a full court press and a ferocious defense. Turnovers kept LCHS in it but the Lions started pulling away slowly, going up 44-36.
In the fourth period, Lawrence County started to hit three points, going 5-11 from the three line.
The Wildcats managed to pull within two points with 3 minutes to go but Columbia was able to hit their free throws to keep the lead and eventually walked off the court with a 63-59 victory.
The win makes Columbia 5-2 in their last seven games after starting the season 0-10. Lawrence County drops to 9-8 for the year.
The Wildcats were led by Senior #42 Heath Mansfield with 24 points and #52 Kade Skinner with 13.
The Cats will travel to Shelbyville on Friday to continue district play, while Columbia travels to Franklin County.
